Scott Simpson
MP For Coromandel
Media Release
17 June 2014
Coromandel MP Scott Simpson is congratulating the Western Bay of Plenty District Council for winning a top environmental
prize -- a Green Ribbon award for Public Sector Leadership.
The award is for how the council deals with biosolids from the Waihi Beach and Katikati wastewater treatment plants;
instead of going into a landfill, the council uses biosolids as natural fertiliser and soil conditioner on stock
paddocks.
Scott Simpson says “This is innovative stuff from the Western Bay of Plenty District Council. As New Zealand’s first
council to undertake full scale vermicomposting, it is leading the way in caring for the environment. What a great role
model for other councils, organisations and businesses! The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is a thoroughly
deserving winner.”
The Green Ribbon Awards, held by the Ministry for the Environment, are to recognise contributions to protecting and
enhancing New Zealand’s environment.
