Local Councils Get Funding to Support Young People
Coromandel MP Scott Simpson is encouraged that two local councils have been awarded government funding to support youth
projects.
Hauraki District Council will receive $15,000 for a youth leader mentoring programme and a project to prevent littering.
Thames Coromandel District Council will receive $20,000 for young people to establish a volunteering system in Thames.
Scott Simpson MP says “We have some really talented, enthusiastic young people in the Coromandel electorate. These
District Councils recognise that, and want to help them reach their potential. I am delighted the councils are getting
financial help from the Ministry of Youth Affairs.”
Mr Simpson says “Encouraging our young people to have their voices heard and to be involved in our communities will
stand us all in good stead for the future. After all, they are the leaders of tomorrow.”
The funding is part of a three-quarter of a million dollar boost for council projects that support 12 to 24 years olds.
Since the launch of the Youth Development Partnership Fund in 2005, more than 50 city and district councils have been
supported to work with and improve the outcomes for young people in their regions.
