No losers if Government acts now
With the International Whaling Commission making, for the third time, very clear and firm recommendations regarding the
protection of Maui’s dolphin, it is past time the Government acted, Labour’s Conservation spokesperson Ruth Dyson says.
“There are growing calls for an international boycott on buying New Zealand fish because our fishing practices threaten
the future of Maui’s dolphin.
“It is the government that sets the rules - and it needs to listen to the best scientific advice available if we are to
protect our dolphins and our fishing industry.
The IWC Scientific Committee has recommended:
Extending protection for Maui’s dolphin from Maunganui Bluff to Whanganui
Extending protection to 20 nautical miles offshore
And banning gillnet and trawling fisheries in this area.
“These recommendations should be implemented. With only 55 adult Maui’s dolphins remaining everything possible should be
done to protect the future of the species.
“That means the fishing industry should also be supported to transition to sustainable fishing practices, rather than
just being left in the lurch.
“There doesn’t have to be a loser here. We can save this species and enhance the reputation of our fisheries.
“All that’s needed is for Government to act in the best interests of everyone involved.”
