Government Changes to GST Outrageous
6 JUNE 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is labelling the changes to GST announced by Revenue Minister, Todd McClay, as outrageous. Reacting to Mr McClay’s announcement this morning, Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Union says:
"These rule changes are not about reducing complexity and compliance costs. They’re about raising more revenue for the Government."
“Instead of clarifying the GST rules for bodies corporate, the Government is whacking them with rule changes that amount to a tax grab.”
“Rather than proper consultation, the Government appears to be making tax legislation by press release, with a promise of a tax bill retrospectively applied to today. It is an outrageous process."
The Taxpayers’ Union this afternoon published a comment piece by the former Deputy Commission of IRD, Robin Oliver and tax specialist Mike Shaw. The piece is available atwww.taxpayers.org.nz.
