NZ Mission Trust Board Otamataha Empowering Bill
National List MP Claudette Hauiti congratulates Tauranga Moana Hapu Ngati Tapu and Ngaitamarawaho for the passing of the NZ MISSION TRUST BOARD OTAMATAHA EMPOWERING BILL.
"Yet again another example of how the National Government is honouring its role as partner in the Treaty of Waitangi," Ms Hauiti said.
The Bill transfers land in Tauranga and other property from the New Zealand Mission Trust to the Otamataha Trust - the Hapu of Ngati Tapu and Ngaitamarawaho. It was brought to Parliament by co-leader of the Maori Party Te Ururoa Flavell.
"Like Treaty Settlements the return of disputed Land purchases to Maori by the Crown acknowledges the injustices of the past so we can move forward as a nation," Ms Hauiti said.
The returned land is the 7863 square meters waterfront site the Trinity Wharf Hotel sits on. The Otamatea Trusts currently collects ground rent from the Hotel.
"The Hapu can now use those monies for both commercial and social investments to determine their rangatiratanga," Ms Hauiti said.
