Threadbare Budget Has Nothing for Pasifika
New Zealand First challenges the government to show where Pasifika will find “more jobs and higher incomes” as it claimed in Budget 2014.
“Despite many Pacific people attending skills training courses, they are still unable to find work,” says Spokesperson for Pacific Island Affairs Le’aufa’amulia Asenati Lole-Taylor.
“The government’s threadbare budget has not addressed job creation at all for Pasifika.
“Pacific people in New Zealand are more educated and qualified than ever before but Pasifika unemployment is still twice the national rate at 13 per cent.
“There are more than 11,000 unemployed Pacific people in Auckland alone, and incomes for those who are working have dropped by more than $2,000 in the past two years in comparison to others.
“The Government’s Pasifika Education Plan will not be successful in elevating Pasifika communities unless they can find good jobs with fair wages.
“New Zealand First wants to see stronger commitment to job creation,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
