New TEI Council members appointed
Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce today announced 10 appointments to five tertiary
education institution councils, which include seven new council members.
“I am pleased to welcome these high-calibre council appointees into their new roles,” Mr Joyce says.
“These appointments are to the council of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and to four councils in the polytechnic sector, and are
intended to reinforce the leadership of those polytechnic councils.
“I also wish to recognise the valuable contribution made by outgoing council members and to thank them for their
service.”
The appointments and reappointments of council members are:
• Te Wānanga o Aotearoa: new appointment of Dr Kathie Irwin as council member
• Aoraki Polytechnic: appointment of two new members to leadership positions, with Ms Janie Annear as Chair and of Ms
Anne Marett as Deputy Chair
• Unitec Institute of Technology: appointment of two new members with Dr Lee Mathias appointed as Chair and Ms Sarah
Haydon as a council member, and the reappointment of Ms Anne Blackburn as a member of the Unitec council
• Manukau Institute of Technology: new appointment of Mr Brian Monk as Deputy Chair of the council
• Universal College of Learning (UCOL): appointment of Mr Malcolm Inglis, the present Deputy Chair, as Chair of the
council; appointment of Mr Ben Vanderkolk who is a member of the council as the Deputy Chair; and the new appointment of
Ms Leanne Southey as a council member.
The new appointees are:
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa
Dr Kathie Irwin is CEO and founder of the consultancy, Hope Brokers Inc. Dr Irwin’s career has focused on Māori research, development
and scholarship, and has included academic posts and senior management positions in the public sector. Dr Irwin is an
active member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors, Te Awe (Wellington Māori Business Network) and the Māori
Women’s Welfare League. She served on the board of Ako Aotearoa, National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence, for
its first six years and remains a member of the Maori Caucus.
Aoraki Polytechnic
Ms Janie Annear, ONZM, was the Mayor of the Timaru District for three terms and received her honour for services to local government.
Ms Annear is now a professional director and businesswoman and is one of six Temporary Local Government Commissioners
appointed to assist the Commission review council structures. A qualified teacher, her early career was in education.
More recently, Ms Annear has been involved in many national and regional committees including civil defence and lottery
distribution.
Ms Anne Marett has been a director at Croys since 2006. An accounting professional, Ms Marett has been involved in the New Zealand
Institute of Chartered Accountants as councillor for the region and was recently awarded a Fellowship of the New Zealand
Institute of Chartered Accountants for her outstanding contribution to the accountancy profession and service to the
community.
Unitec Insitute of Technology
Dr Lee Mathias, ONZM, received her honour for services to health and business but is also active in the biotech start-up sector and in
organisations that promote the role of women in our society. Dr Mathias is the inaugural Chair of the Health Promotion
Agency and Chair of Company of Women, an organisation that helps women entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, the
founder of Birthcare, and a director of biotech company Pictor and of several public sector boards.
Ms Sarah Haydon is a qualified chartered accountant and has been a member of The Boardroom Practice team since 2012. Ms Haydon has an
extensive background in strategic planning, finance, general management and organisational development. Her governance
portfolio includes Cavalier Corporation Limited, AsureQuality Limited, New Zealand Riding for the Disabled Association
Inc (where she is Chair), Waste Disposal Services, and a charitable trust.
Manukau Institute of Technology
Mr Brian Monk is a chartered accountant and Chief Financial Officer at Watercare Services Ltd. He has a depth of commercial experience
and an understanding of the public sector. As advisor to the Auckland Transition Agency, Mr Monk was at the core of the
financial strategy and planning for the new Auckland Council and related organisations.
Universal College of Learning
Miss Leanne Southey is a director of Southey Sayer, a Wairarapa-based business development and chartered accountancy firm. Her governance
experience includes current Deputy Chair of the Wairarapa District Health Board and of the Masterton Lands Trust. Miss
Southey has strong business and financial experience together with local knowledge.
