Key Notes - Rebuild gaining momentum
Every time I visit Canterbury I am struck by the changes I see and inspired by the resolve of the region's people. Today
was no different.
I delivered a speech outlining some of the great work being done to rebuild the region and how this work is driving the
economy.
The Government's contribution to the rebuild will be around $15 billion. We are paying around $9 million every day in
rebuild invoices.
We are committed to the rebuild of our second largest city.
And there is no better example of this than the residential red zone.
This is an area around four times the size of Hagley Park. More than 7300 flat land properties in Christchurch and
Kaiapoi were red zoned because of the earthquakes.
We want to hear from the community about what happens with this land.
The land has been severely damaged, but we can still find new ways to use it.
That is why I and Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee announced today the public will have a say on the future
use of red zone land.
Whether the red zone is used for parks, playing fields, cycleways, or any other innovative ideas, we want to hear from
Cantabrians.
