Economic Tinkering Has Wider Social Impact
The National Government’s handling of the economy is making little difference to many Kiwis, says New Zealand First.
“The Government’s plan to return the budget to surplus has made them blind to the realities around them where people are homeless, children are hungry and families are breaking apart,” says Spokesperson for Social Policy Le’aufa’amulia Asenati Lole-Taylor
“It may make them look financially responsible but there’s no point if they’re not being socially responsible at the same time.
“Go and ask the average New Zealander struggling to make ends meet if they feel better off.
“A mother of six, who has finally found a job, to help her husband support their family told me they still have to bake cakes and donuts to sell, otherwise they cannot afford the basic necessities.
“The Government’s tinkering with our economy and financial system has a huge impact on people trying to find jobs and put food on the table.
“Many people are struggling to survive and rely on the Government to act in their best interests.
“What we are seeing instead is a Government that is completely out-of-touch with how difficult life is for those at the bottom end. They’ve spent too much time rubbing shoulders with wealthy executives.
“There are 150,000 unemployed in New Zealand and a growing class of working poor. National’s economic policy has done nothing to improve the lives of ordinary Kiwis,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
