Relief Efforts Need Plenty of Support
New Zealand First is encouraging Kiwis to support relief efforts in the Solomon Islands in any way they can.
At least 21 people were killed after flash floods swept through the capital, Honiara, and more than 15,000 people are in
desperate need of food and shelter.
“This is one of the worst natural disasters in the Solomon Islands since cyclone Namu in 1986. We must do our best to
support our Pacific neighbours at this time of great need,” says Spokesperson Pacific Island Affairs, Le’aufa’amulia
Asenati Lole-Taylor.
“As the stormwaters subside we will begin to see the true extent of the devastation.
“Some people have lost everything. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their homes and loved
ones.
“There are a number of disaster relief agencies involved in getting much-needed supplies to the people of Honiara and
Guadalcanal. Those wanting to assist relief efforts should contact one of these agencies to ask about the best way to
help.
“There is so much yet to be done in places like Christchurch, Samoa and Tonga and with this latest tragedy those working
at the coalface of relief efforts will need all the help they can get,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
