Whales the winners at International Court of Justice
The Green Party welcomes the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the legality of Japan’s ‘scientific’ whaling programme.
“This is a clear win for the whales,” said Green Party Oceans spokesperson Gareth Hughes.
“It was always obvious ‘scientific’ whaling was simply a guise for commercial whaling and now the International Court’s ruling makes this clear.
“The Green Party has long argued for legal action to stop whaling in the Southern Ocean and is heartened by the Court’s clear ruling.
“While Japan says they will abide by the ruling diplomatic pressure needs to be continued by the New Zealand Government to ensure Japan don’t seek to use a loophole.
“Australia needs to be congratulated for leading this case and New Zealand for its intervening arguments at The Hague.
“New Zealanders love whales and are opposed to the slaughter in the Southern Ocean and I am glad this court ruling hopefully will see the end of Japan’s controversial ‘scientific’ whaling programme,” said Mr Hughes.
