VINCE MCGLONE
New Zealand First today wishes to pay tribute to one of New Zealand’s best, former Navy gunner Vince "Cyclone" McGlone,
who has died at the age of 97.
“We would like to extend our sympathy to Vince’s family,” says Spokesperson for Veterans’ Affairs Andrew Williams and
Associate Spokesperson for Defence Richard Prosser.
Vince served for 14 years with the Royal New Zealand Navy, and was on the HMS Achilles during the Battle of the River
Plate in 1939 off South America.
“The passing of all servicemen and women is a sad occasion, but it is also a time for us to reflect on the enormous
sacrifices they have made for their country.
“Vince was on the Achilles when it came up against the German ship the Graf Spee - he would have known some terrifying
moments and witnessed the suffering of fellow crewmen during the battle.
“For the Achilles to come out on top was a major achievement, and Vince was one of the last surviving members of the
crew.”
