Renewable Energy a Winner for Stewart Island
New Zealand First is calling for a new source of power for Stewart Island.
“It is ironic that New Zealand has done a fantastic job in assisting the Pacific nations of Tokelau and Tuvalu with
state-of-the-art solar power generation but our third largest island still relies on diesel generation” says
spokesperson for Energy Andrew Williams.
“New Zealand thinks of itself as being an environmental leader but we must demonstrate this in a practical way. Stewart
Island is the perfect candidate.
“New Zealand can put its faith in renewable energy for a one-off estimated cost of $2.5 to $5 million and minimal
on-going costs.
“At present the diesel costs $500,000 a year and Stewart Islanders pay 62 cents a unit for electricity and a very high
lines charge.
“Stewart Islanders have been seeking a new form of generation for years. Research shows there are alternatives and even
solar is a viable option with about 1650 sunshine hours a year.

“Let’s move forward as we have for our Pacific neighbours and for workers in the Antarctic where Scott Base uses wind
power,” says Mr Williams.
