Maori Party congratulates Dr Lance O’Sullivan – Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year 2014
The Maori Party congratulates Dr Lance O'Sullivan who was named ‘Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year 2014’ at an awards
ceremony in Auckland last night.
"Dr O’Sullivan has successfully established a health service that reflects an holistic approach to the health and well
being of the people in the north. We all know that illness is often connected with poverty and poor living conditions
and Dr O’ Sullivan helps address both the medical and social needs for some of the poorest people in his community”,
says Maori Party Co-leader Tariana Turia.
“What makes Lance stand out is his selfless dedication towards doing whatever it takes to improve the quality of life
for the families who come to him for help. His love for the people and his determination to work with them on creating
a better future are truly the characteristics of a champion. He is one of the GPs nationwide who understands the social
determinants affecting health and he acts to do something about it. Poverty is rife in the north and he treats people
regardless of their ability to pay. He is a leader and an absolute credit to his whanau.”
"Working fulltime does not always leave much time for your family or your own interests but Dr O’Sullivan walks the talk
- he is a committed family man, a husband and a father and even finds time to keep himself fit and active. He is an
excellent role model for us all,” says Maori Party Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell.
"Dr O’Sullivan has made us all proud. He has taken a unique approach to serving his people and in doing so he has made a
difference to so many struggling families. This award recognises his amazing contribution to the people of the north and
we congratulate him whole heartedly. It is well deserved,” says Dr Pita Sharples.
