Small Pacific Islands Promote Human Rights
New Zealand First Spokesperson for Pacific Island Affairs Le’aufa’amulia Asenati Lole-Taylor says human rights training for public officers in Smaller Island States is a positive sign for the Pacific region.
“I want to congratulate the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat officers and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community/Regional Rights and Resource Team for following through with the vision for a Pacific region that is internationally respected for its defence and promotion of human rights.
“Local officers from the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Tuvalu and the Republic of the Marshall Islands are currently undergoing human rights mentoring and training. This will help to spread the right message at a grassroots level in their respective communities.
“It is encouraging to see good leadership on such issues in the Pacific Islands. Despite their size, they are doing their part to promote human rights to the rest of the world,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
