New legal complaints review officer appointed
Associate Justice Minister Chester Borrows today announced the appointment of Mr Rex Maidment as the Legal Complaints Review Officer. He also announced the reappointment of Deputy Legal Complaints Review Officer, Mr Owen Vaughan.
“Mr Maidment has been very successful as Principal Tenancy Adjudicator over the past six years and his person attributes, skills and experience will be invaluable in his new role,” says Mr Borrows.
Mr Maidment was a barrister sole from 2000 to 2007 specialising in civil, employment, property, criminal, family and mental health law. His early experience was in general practice as a lawyer and litigation partner in a South Auckland law firm.
Mr Maidment will be assisted by two Deputy Legal Complaints Review Officers, Mr Vauhan and Ms Dorothy Thresher.
The appointments are, made under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006, are for terms of three years.
Mr Borrows also paid tribute to outgoing Legal Complaints Review Officer, Ms Hanneke Bouchier who did not apply for reappointment when her term expired.
Background
The Legal Complaints Review Officer and deputies are responsible for independently reviewing the decisions of the Lawyers Standards Committees and the Conveyancers Standards Committees. These committees operate as an accessible service for the investigation and resolution of complaints about practitioners, incorporated firms, and their employees.
Appointments are made after consultation with the New Zealand Law Society and the New Zealand Society of Conveyancers.
