Four days in a boat to highlight conservation
Auckland Labour MP Phil Twyford is preparing to kayak 50km around Waitemata Harbour to draw attention to marine
conservation issues in the heart of the city.
Over four days he will be meeting scientists and visiting local conservation projects to learn about the state of the
Waitemata, as well as looking at what can be done to clean it up for future generations.
“The Waitemata is the jewel of Auckland. It is our beautiful playground, but development pressures are taking their
toll. Pollution and invasive species are making the harbour and the wider Hauraki Gulf sick.”
The journey starts on Monday 20 January in the MP’s Te Atatu electorate, and takes in the Motu Manawa Marine Reserve,
Meola Reef, Herne Bay, Wynyard Quarter and the downtown wharves, Okahu Bay, along the eastern bays to Tamaki Estuary,
across to Devonport, Shoal Bay, back under the harbour bridge, around Kauri Point, up Kaipatiki Stream, and across to
Hobsonville before returning to Te Atatu late on Thursday 24 January.
