Poor returns shows Landcorp should be sold
Press Release by ACT New Zealand Associate Primary Industries Spokeman Robin Grieve
Friday, October 25 2013
ACT New Zealand Associate Primary Industries Spokesman Robin Grieve says the Government should sell Landcorp to boost the returns it receives from its partial asset sale programme.
“Landcorp paid $5 million in dividends to the Government for the year ended 30 June 2013.  This is nowhere near enough to justify keeping an asset valued at $1.69 billion,” Mr Grieve said.
“It is not the role of Government to be in the business of running farms, especially when it is getting such poor returns.
"Landcorp should not be a developer and manager of farms owned by other people when the private sector can do this.
“Selling Landcorp would free up funds that would be better spent on services like health and education.
“Landcorp farms could be sold off one by one over a period of time to ensure a good sale price for New Zealanders.
“ACT would support any move by the  Government  to ready Landcorp for sale,” Mr Grieve said.
