Dunedin MPs unite behind Robertson
Dunedin's two electorate MPs David Clark and Clare Curran have today come out in support of Labour Leadership contender
Grant Robertson. The MPs say Robertson will make an excellent Prime Minister and represents the party’s best chance
against John Key in the next election.
“Grant Robertson is a leader. His values were shaped during some tough times as a kid. He grew up in South Dunedin, one
of the lowest income electorates in New Zealand. Those who remember him as Head Boy of Kings High School in the 1980s
admired his talent and courage then. Experience has only made him stronger.
“We need a leader whose sense of social justice is instinctive, someone with sound judgement who gets it right first
time. Grant Robertson is that man”, the MPs said.
“Grant is a clear communicator with strong principles who is a highly effective politician.
“But he also understands what it’s like to struggle. He is a kind and good person and he has a deep understanding of
what Labour can do for New Zealand.
“Neither of us has previously expressed our preference publicly because we expect party members to form their own view.
That said, many have sought an opinion, and we have been willing to share when asked.
“The feedback we’ve had from party members shows a ground-swell of support for Grant.
While the MPs said Grant Robertson had the best combination of qualities for Prime Minister and Party Leader, they said
all of the contenders had performed strongly during the selection process, and they would unite behind the eventual
winner whoever that might be.
“Grant, Shane and David are friends and colleagues. We take our hats off to them for putting themselves forward at this
time. The leadership contest has been a real opportunity to showcase Labour values and our team. I think New Zealanders
have been quite impressed with the depth and breadth of talent within our ranks.
“All of the candidates are talented people. Whoever is chosen by the party will have our full support. Today we stand
behind one of those candidates as the best choice for our Party, for our city and for our country,” the MPs said.
