Time for country of origin labelling
Industry wants it, New Zealanders want it, we have a members bill to do it - the time for Country of Origin Labelling is now, the Green Party said today.
Beef + Lamb today announced that they recognised consumers rights to know the origin of their food and wold be introducing country of origin labelling for Australian beef and lamb.
“It’s great to see Beef + Lamb support consumer’s rights to know what they are eating,” Green Party food spokesperson Mojo Mathers said today.
“Fonterra needs to step up and join Beef + Lamb and Horticulture NZ and support country of origin food labelling.”
“Consumers want to know where their food comes from; this is another great step on the road to mandatory country of origin food labelling.
“We already have mandatory Country of Origin Labelling for clothes and shoes, there is no reason why we can’t extend this to food.
“My Consumers' Right to Know (Country of Origin of Food) Bill would ensure that for single ingredient foods consumers would be able to easily see where their food comes from,” said Ms Mathers.
