Bill does nothing for building sector woes
Government-led building legislation before the House tonight fails to address any of the serious issues the industry is now facing, says Labour’s Building and Construction spokesperson Raymond Huo.
"Since the leaky building saga New Zealanders have been calling for better consumer protection and the genuine reallocation of responsibility and accountability among building consenting authorities, building professionals and consumers.
“All Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson has delivered is publicity gimmicks.
“His Building Amendment Bill No 4 does not directly address the accountability of manufacturers and suppliers of building materials, including those off-shore, even though faulty materials played a critical role in the leaky building saga.
“The Minister’s ‘piecemeal and uncoordinated’ approach to replacing Code ‘Compliance’ Certificates with ‘Completion’ certificates would have a negative impact on aggrieved home owners seeking redress.
“Strengthening earthquake-prone buildings to a higher standard is also a major issue.
"In terms of the overall building law review, the Minister has referred almost all important matters to the Law Commission, confirming the view that the Government is not ready to introduce a comprehensive reform package.
“It is unfortunate that in these times of a building sector crisis, New Zealanders are seeing an experienced Minister simply batting away critics rather than showing real leadership,” Raymond Huo said.
