Greens offer condolences to Pacific neighbours
The Green Party offers its condolences to the Samoan people in the wake of Cyclone Evan, Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei said today.
Cyclone Evan is reported to have killed up to 10 people in Samoa and caused extensive damage to crucial infrastructure. It is now heading toward Fiji and gaining strength.
“I want to express the sorrow felt by my colleagues and myself on learning of the tragedy that has struck Samoa and to send our best wishes to Fiji, which is now in the path of Evan,” said Mrs Turei.
“This disaster will be felt especially strongly in New Zealand’s Pasifika community.
“New Zealand’s links to Samoa and Fiji are deep and strong. We have stood by each other in the face of previous trials and we will stand together again as the islands grieve their dead and rebuild,” said Mrs Turei.
