MP welcomes consultation document on high-powered laser pointers
National List MP Dr Cam Calder welcomes the release of a consultation document on how best to manage the risk posed by high-powered laser pointers. Dr Calder has had a Members’ Bill concerning hand-held lasers in the ballot since 2011, and has had several discussions with Associate Health Minister Jo Goodhew, regarding controls on their use.
“The misuse of laser pointers by idiots or children who don’t realise the potential harm they can cause is an increasing problem in New Zealand. Last year alone, the Civil Aviation Authority received about 100 reports of laser strikes on aircrafts,” said Dr Calder.
“Laser pointers are not toys and I welcome this further step towards curbing their misuse.”
