Child abuse case horrifying
The case of a young child tortured by her parents is horrifying and should be a catalyst for change, Labour Social Development spokesperson Jacinda Ardern says.
“This child was failed by her parents in the most horrific way. There are many lessons to be learned from this case.
“This child and far too many others have been subjected to appalling treatment at the hands of the very people they should have been able to rely on for protection
“I am pleased to see that Paula Bennett has today released a raft of recommendations for change following an investigation into this case. Clearly change is needed,” Jacinda Ardern said.
“But Labour would propose one more recommendation – that all political parties work together on issues concerning the welfare and wellbeing of children.
“Child protection isn’t about politics, it’s about saying we have to do things differently and we have to do it now.
“Labour has repeatedly offered to work with National and other political parties on a cross party approach to child welfare. Today we would like to make that offer once again.
“All children in New Zealand deserve to be protected. This case proves we are continuing to fail. We must start doing things differently,” Jacinda Ardern said.
