Drug ban signals progress
Labour is welcoming a decision to place a 12-month ban on all synthetic cannabis products and other new drugs while more
sustainable regulation of new substances is looked into.
“The Government has taken its time about this. It has finally responded to the many public and sector calls for action,”
Labour’s Associate Health spokesperson Iain Lees-Galloway said.
“Hopefully it will see this as an opportunity to look at more than just one of the recommendations that came out of the
Law Commission review, and consider introducing new legislation to replace the out-of-date Misuse of Drugs Act.
“It is only through modern, evidence based legislation, combined with effective and well-resourced alcohol and drug
treatment facilities, that we can truly begin to tackle the harm caused by substance abuse to communities and
individuals,” Iain Lees-Galloway said.
