Registration opens for NZ’s first
political open policy development public event
Labour has today opened registration for a public event as a part of the first New Zealand attempt to develop policy in an open forum directly involving the community, and using online technology.
The event, which will take place on Saturday 28 August in Wellington, will involve high profile international speakers and bring together ideas generated over the last four months on how to deliver open and transparent government.
Communications and IT spokesperson Clare Curran said Labour was embarking on its first open policy process, inviting the public to participate in developing its policy on what an open, transparent government might look like.
The open policy process titled OpenLabourNZ was launched via the Labour MP’s blog Red Alert at the end of April 2010.
Clare Curran said OpenLabourNZ was an experiment in how Labour could more deeply engage with the community and seek their input, by using new technologies and methods to increase participation and collaboration. While it will be a uniquely New Zealand event, the format is drawing on similar processes used in Australia, the US and the UK.
“To date, OpenLabourNZ has attracted hundreds of responses by blogs, Twitter and Facebook and direct communication with the Party.
“Labour is serious about being open and transparent. This is a new initiative, but through it we hope to demonstrate that we mean business and will take the policy to the election and into government,” Clare Curran said.
The public event will feature high profile international and New Zealand speakers and will be held at the Lion Harbourview Lounge at the Michael Fowler Centre. It will also be streamed live over the Internet, and people participating from home can join using Twitter, Facebook and an online forum. Details about how to participate online will be announced soon.
Registration is free, and people can register by emailing open@labour.org.nz.
