Minister Is In Over Her Head

“Kate Wilkinson is clearly in over her head on the debate around changes to the 90 day trial legislation and the Government’s humiliating back down on mining, Labour’s spokesperson for Labour, Trevor Mallard said.

“The Minister failed to adequately answer questions put to her about the 90 day trial changes, she failed to provide informative responses to questions on mining and has shown she is ignorant of even her own legislation.

“I asked a very simple question, ‘Do the good faith provisions override the employees rights to dismiss without giving reason.

“In her answers to questions in the House today, it was clear the Minister either didn't know or failed to admit that employers don't have to give a good reason for firing workers in their first 90 days and that in fact these changes over ride the current law.

“Employees in their first 90 days have no right to comment on the proposed termination before it happens, nor do they have any rights to request reason for their dismissal

“The Minister is about to introduce legislative changes that will strip workers of their basic rights – and it seems she hasn’t even bothered to get to grips with the legislation she is proposing to extend.
