Action required on supermarket prices

Recent debate over the prices being charged for fruit and vegetables by supermarkets is welcome given the pressure on New Zealand families by huge increases in the cost of living, Labour’s Consumer Affairs spokesperson Carol Beaumont said today.

“It is about time that the disquiet felt by consumers and suppliers about the pricing policies of the supermarket duopoly is taken into account and that Government takes action.

“When I previously raised the issue the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Heather Roy, she showed little interest in the effect on food prices. She has essentially told consumers to ‘shop around’.

“Supermarket price setting and the consequences to both consumers and suppliers are issues that are exercising Governments around the world.

"Horticulture NZ is right in saying there needs to be more transparency in the pricing system. They propose an independent investigation to explain where the costs were in the supply chain and where the profits are going.

“This idea and investigation of a supermarket code of practice are well worth consideration and I urge Heather Roy to recognise the needs of New Zealand consumers facing ever increasing price rises,” Carol Beaumont.
