‘We don’t know if we can support this’
The Maori Party caucus has today revealed their concerns about the current status of the policy proposals arising out of
the review of the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004.
“While we acknowledge this is an issue of profound significance to the Maori Party, we are concerned that there are
still some points of difference between the Crown’s position and that of iwi leaders,” Mrs Turia said.
“Unless we can negotiate some changes, the current state of the policy may be a bridge too far for our people.
“We have met with the Iwi leaders Group in Wellington today, and have heard first hand of the concerns that have not
been addressed throughout the negotiations.”
“We have got to a point where it is critical that the Prime Minister hear directly from the iwi leaders, of the
outstanding issues that require resolution before the Maori Party can give consideration to supporting,” Dr Sharples
said.
“We are hoping for a meeting with the Prime Minister, the Iwi Leaders Group and ourselves over the weekend, to enable a
frank and genuine dialogue to occur between the Treaty partners.”
