Rotorua MP Congratulates Kaharoa Kokako Trust For Top New Zealand Environment Award
Rotorua MP Todd McClay has said that it is fantastic news that the Kaharoa Kokako Trust has been named New Zealand’s Supreme Winner at the 2010 Green Ribbon Environment Awards in Parliament on Thursday night.
The Green Ribbon Awards awarded by Environment Minister Nick Smith to recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals, organisations, businesses and communities to protecting and enhancing New Zealand’s environment.
Mr McClay said that as a nation, New Zealanders are committed to environmental sustainability. 2010 marks the 20th Green Ribbon Awards. The revised nomination categories for this year’s awards reflect the Government’s environmental priorities and the many different areas in which New Zealanders contribute to reducing the impacts we have on our environment.
Mr. McClay said that he was extremely proud to have joined members of the Kaharoa based Trust at the Awards Ceremony and to have presented them with this prestigious award recognising that they are the best in the country.
"The Kaharoa Kokako Trust has demonstrated impressive predator control efforts and have played a significant role in the national kokako recovery programme. The Trust has increased the number of kokako from 12 pairs when they started in 1997 to an impressive 121 adults in 2006", he said
“To have been recognised as the 2010 Supreme New Zealand-wide winner demonstrates the hard work and commitment that the Kaharoa Kokako Trust has to the wider Rotorua area,” Mr McClay said.
“This is an extremely prestigious award and I congratulate the many supporters who have worked tirelessly to make this recognition possible,” Mr. McClay said.
