Aucklanders' victory for commonsense

Victory for commonsense - Aucklanders to get speaking rights at CCOs

Aucklanders may not get to elect who runs Council Controlled Organisations but at least now they will be able to engage publicly with them, Labour Local Government spokesperson George Hawkins said.

"In a last minute change put forward by me, to the Local Government (Auckland Law Reform) Bill, the Government has accepted that Aucklanders must be given the right to address CCOs and for CCOs to hold at least two public meetings a year," George Hawkins said.

"I am glad the Government has seen sense on this. Aucklanders have been increasingly concerned about the process the Government has been following regarding the Super City.

"CCOs will be incredibly powerful organisations under the new council structure, and without this amendment put forward by Labour, Aucklanders would have had no ability to influence their decision making," George Hawkins said.
