Collins washes her hands of responsibility for public
safety
The Minister of Corrections and
Police Judith Collins has washed her hands of responsibility
for protecting the public from convicted rapist Maka Renata
who has breached his release conditions, says Labour Law and
Order spokesperson Clayton Cosgrove.
“When asked in Parliament today the Minister refused to provide any specific information about the case and dodged responsibility by saying that Renata had finished his prison sentence. Clearly this is where Judith Collins believes her responsibility ends,” Clayton Cosgrove said.
“However, Maka Renata is a convicted rapist described as a ‘timebomb’ and who police confirm has an extremely high risk of reoffending.
“Judith Collins has failed Maka Renata’s rape victims by not by upholding commitment she made when he was released from prison at the end of last year . Judith Collins stated in November ‘an intensive plan has been put in place to manage this offender’s reintegration, which involves police. Agencies will be taking every step possible under the law to ensure the safety of the public’.
“Ms Collins ‘intensive plan’ clearly failed because the convicted rapist has breached his monitoring conditions twice this year and has now been on the run for nearly three weeks.
“Judith Collins needs to front up and explain to the public how a dangerous criminal managed to abscond twice and what is being done to find him.
“Her explanation that she won’t comment because it's an operational issue is simply not good enough. This is a public safety issue.
“If the Minister is happy to take the credit when things go well, she should have the guts to front up to the public when things go wrong.
“This is an issue of public safety and sadly rather than thinking about the people who are at risk while Maka Renata is on the run the Minister is more interested in protecting her own image. But this seems to be typical behaviour from Judith Collins.
“Maka Renata’s victims and the public deserve to be protected and they have a right to know what is being done to catch this rapist,” Clayton Cosgrove said.
