IT policy builds on major reforms
The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, David Cunliffe today launched Labour’s IT policy saying that
it builds on the successful framework the Labour-led government has built.
“Labour’s push for broadband has already been tremendously successful, Mr Cunliffe said.”OECD figures show that in the
last year, we had the sixth fastest growth rate in broadband uptake. This is because of the pro- competitive environment
and the telecommunications reforms Labour has made.”
“The policy I released today will build on the new environment we have created, and will result in faster and cheaper
services to kiwis both at home and work.”
The policy will bring forward the previously announced $500 million dollars over 5 years for ultrafast broadband if
regions are in need of additional economic stimulus and includes a commitment to investigate funding of a similar amount
for a further five years.
“When Labour’s broadband investment fund is fully implemented it is expected to bring in a total of around $3 billion
dollars in public and private investment,” said Mr Cunliffe.
“Labour’s policy will also improve ICT training and mentoring for small and medium sized businesses. We also pledge to
promote all business productivity by lowering the cost of international broadband connections.”
“Much has already been achieved with the unbundling of the local loop and the operational separation of Telecom so that
telecommunication users have access to a greater choice in providers. Our Digital strategy is a world leader with a
whole of government approach to the challenges of the Digital world.”
“Under Labour the interests of all New Zealand telecommunication users must come first and to that end Labour will
expand free or low cost internet access through programmes such as the Aotearoa Peoples Network, school based ICT ,
Computers in homes and KAREN.”
