“Americans have said YES WE CAN, and the world has witnessed history changing before our very eyes” said Tariana Turia today at the news of the election of Democrat Barack Obama as President of the United States”
“I know that throughout homes all over Aotearoa, the tears will be flowing at this unique moment in time” said Mrs Turia. “It has been the most incredible experience, to see literally millions of lives transformed through the vision of the Obama dream”.
“The political phenomenon of the Obama campaign has captivated the hearts and minds of a nation with a strategy that has invested in hope” said Dr Pita Sharples.
“Barack Obama not only represents the strength of black liberation; he represents an impressive commitment to the power of the people.
"What we have seen in his remarkable campaign for Presidency, is a mobilisation of the diverse cultures and peoples of all who have inherited the opportunity to pursue ‘an American dream’”
“The US Election results have demonstrated the will of the American people to acknowledge and accept the contribution that African-American people make to their nation” said Tariana Turia. "This is truly history in the making, we have not been here before".
“America has chosen a President who has also publicly committed to being a full partner with the American Indian peoples; to respect, honour and work with tribal citizens and tribal communities”.
“We, in the Maori Party, are greatly buoyed by the energy and enthusiasm shown in the Obama campaign; and have felt uplifted by the magnificent turnout of everyday people, people who are proud to participate in the democratic process”.
“We hope that in just over 60 hours time, Aotearoa will demonstrate to the world our readiness to also be proud of all our people – to make a commitment to a nation in which all peoples are able to succeed – and to know, that is the New Zealand way”.
The Maori Party has sent their official congratulations to Todd Campbell, the National Rural Vote Director for Barak Obama’s campaign team.
