Key slippery even when trying to look tough
John Key has shown that he cannot take a firm position even when he grandstands in an attempt to look tough and decisive, Deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen said today.
John Key called a press conference this afternoon to make an ‘announcement’ about the future place of Winston Peters in any future National-led government. His staff told journalists that he would rule Mr Peters out of any post-election governing arrangements if National wins this year’s election.
Instead, Mr Key showed up to the press conference and backed away from a firm position, saying that Mr Peters might be able to serve in a future National government if he comes up with a good explanation.
“John Key being slippery is nothing new,” Dr Cullen said.
“But being slippery when he’s trying to look tough is pretty sad even by his standards.
“He summoned the nation’s media to his press conference to bolster his credentials as a high-minded, decisive leader. And when they got there all they saw was a man who can’t take a firm position on any issue just as usual.
“Helen Clark has made it clear that she is waiting on the outcome of the Privileges Committee who will examine the conflicting evidence presented to it today. Mr Key attacked that position in the House today, and then called a press conference to announce that he holds the exact same position.
“It is no wonder New Zealanders are starting to have real doubts about John Key.”
