Ban the persistent poison Endosulfan – Maori Party

The Maori Party has called on ERMA not to approve Endosulfan as a poison for insects and worms in New Zealand.
ERMA is currently considering an application to renew approval of endosulfan. It is sprayed on vegetables, fruit and
flowers, and is also used to kill worms on golf courses, airports and other grassed areas.
“The problem is that this is a persistent poison, it affects birds that feed on poisoned worms, it gets into fresh
waters systems, right to the sea, where it affects fish,” said Tariana Turia. “The whole environment is affected.”
“Fifty five countries have banned this poison. Because it is so persistent, it has been referred to the UN for a global
ban under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
“Tangata whenua cannot protect their environment if this type of hidden poison gets into the ecosystem, there’s no way
to keep it out. So using this kind of poison is an attack on the mana of tangata whenua, and the traditional values of
guardianship,” she said.
“ERMA’s own research report says they have not consulted tangata whenua, and it appears that the application is not
consistent with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
“We have not heard of any tangata whenua group agreeing to this stuff. It’s too toxic for the job it does, there are
other poisons that affect the environment less, so we call on ERMA to reject this application,” said Tariana Turia.
