National leads, Labour follows on family violence
It’s good to see Labour has today finally adopted National’s innovative plan to introduce on-the-spot protection orders to help deal with domestic violence, says National’s Justice spokesman, Simon Power.
“Labour’s policy is a copy of National’s policy, which was announced by leader John Key on November 1 last year.
"The only thing the Minister of Justice could say in response at the time was an acknowledgement that ‘much remains to be done to counter the evil of domestic violence in this country’, and ‘Areas like protection orders and bail are continually being revaluated and analysed.’
“We believe giving police the ability to issue on-the-spot protection orders for suspected victims of domestic violence will be very effective in putting their immediate safety first.
“It’s a pity it took Labour eight years to do anything about it – and when National came up with an idea that got widespread support from the public, women’s groups, and the police, Labour rushed in and picked it up.
“Under Labour’s watch, violent crime has continued to rise, and particularly domestic violence, which has risen 32% since they were elected.
“On-the-spot protection orders are a good idea, we believe they will work, and we’re flattered Labour thinks so as well.”
