Youth Crime Will Still Be Focus For New Zealand First - Mark
Despite the defeat at the second reading yesterday of his Young Offenders (Serious Crimes) Bill, Ron Mark says that the case for action on youth crime is even stronger.
“Although we are disappointed it is important to note that almost every party in the House agreed that violent offending by young people is escalating, having risen 47.5% in the last 10 years.
“How frustrating, then, to see the larger parties, who talk tough on law and order, refuse to consider the amendments that would have delivered a satisfactory outcome for a workable bill.
“I am grateful for the support of Act, United Future, Judy Turner and Heather Roy who both spoke so well in the debate, Gordon Copeland, and particularly Brian Connell and Taito Philip Field, who crossed the floor to support our bill.
“As for the tough talkers, doing nothing is still not good enough.
“The public, who are the ones affected by the rising tide of youth violence and crime, can rest assured that New Zealand First will continue to focus on youth crime both in the lead-up to the election and beyond,” said Mr Mark.
