Kiwi quake experts should be sent to China
National Party Ethnic Affairs spokeswoman Pansy Wong is urging the Government to send earthquake experts to China as the devastating effects of the Sichuan earthquake become clear.
The 7.9 magnitude quake, which struck on Monday, has killed close to 15,000 people, and 27,000 are still reported buried or missing.
"I have received many calls from our Chinese community asking for New Zealand to send those with knowledge of rescue, recovery and rebuilding.
"I welcome the $500,000 contribution made by New Zealand through the Red Cross and know that this aid will be used wisely. However practical help is also essential.
"New Zealand should now join other countries in offering emergency relief teams to help China with the mammoth task it faces.
"This is a disaster on a scale that is almost incomprehensible. We should do all that we can."
