Minister approves intervention for Kaikohe kura
Education Minister Chris Carter today announced the appointment of two people to the board of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o
Kaikohe in response to an Education Review Office (ERO) report.
Connie Hassan has been appointed a limited statutory manager under section 78M of the Education Act, with responsibility
for employment.
Ray Henwood has been appointed a specialist adviser under section 78K of the Act, with responsibility for teaching and
learning, and student achievement.
Chris Carter said the move was taken to ensure a quality education for students at the kura.
“Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kaikohe has been through some turbulent times recently,” Chris Carter said.
“As Minister, my primary concern is for the safety, achievement and future of the students at Kaikohe.
“I felt strongly the kura needed extra support to move forward. It is a significant school within the kura movement, and
it’s important that it gets back to performing well as quickly as possible.”
ERO’s report recommended a commissioner be appointed, replacing the board of trustees.
However, Chris Carter said the board had only been elected last year.
“While I understand ERO’s level of concern, I think the board should be given the opportunity – with the right support –
to bring about positive change themselves.”
