End Of Child Poverty Worthy Goal
The end of the child poverty described in the Child Poverty Action Group’s report Left Behind should be a goal aspired
to by all political parties says New Zealand First family spokesperson Barbara Stewart.
“The report, which defines inequality and its consequences to children, makes sobering reading, especially with regard
to the way in which income and social inequality compound.
“However CPAG also has some suggestions on how to combat the effects of poverty which should be of interest to policy
makers in an election year.
“New Zealand First has fought a long battle to obtain free medical care for all under sixes. We are also finalising a
member’s bill seeking free medical and dental care for all children whose caregivers are on the Domestic Purposes
Benefit.
“We congratulate all those involved in researching and presenting the report and will be watching with interest to see
whether the call for the Government to prioritise ending child poverty is translated into action,” said Mrs Stewart.
