English blocks debate on Auckland Airport decision
National Party Deputy Leader Bill English today blocked a move for Parliament to urgently debate the decision of
government ministers to stop the 40 per cent sale of Auckland Airport to the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board.
“Urgent debates are usually a much sought after opportunity for the opposition to attack the government on high profile
issues,” Finance Minister Michael Cullen said.
“Given that John Key has attacked the decision on Auckland Airport as ‘a terrible message’ and ‘blantantly political’,
one would have guessed that they would be eager to debate this issue in Parliament. I came to the House today prepared
to respond to their criticisms.
“Bill English denied leave for the debate – a clear signal that National knows their weak stance on protecting assets is
out of touch with New Zealanders.”
