Ngati Porou Agreement A Major Achievement
New Zealand First Maori Affairs spokesperson Pita Paraone welcomes the signing of Ngati Porou’s Heads of Agreement, the first under the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004, and says it is an indication of how the Act can support Maori.
“This is a momentous occasion for all involved in the negotiations and we are supportive of what has been agreed,” said Mr Paraone.
“New Zealand First supported the passage of the Foreshore and Seabed legislation and was always confident that the rights of all New Zealanders were protected.
“This agreement will not only ensure that all New Zealanders are able to enjoy the coastal areas of the east, but will also guarantee customary rights to Ngati Porou.
“It also sends a positive message to other iwi who have coastlines within their territorial area that the legislation does not prevent the honouring of their customary interests,” said Mr Paraone.
