When will the Government protect our whales?
The New Zealand Government must act to prevent more whales dying following reports that the Japanese fleet has resumed its slaughter, says Green Party Conservation Spokesperson, Metiria Turei.
"With Greenpeace re-fuelling and Sea Shepherd restocking in Australia, the New Zealand Government must now pick up the baton and move to protect an essential part of our ecosystem and important part of our economy.
"The onus for protecting these vulnerable giants is not just on Australia and non-profit organisations. The Pacific Region as a whole receives upwards of US$21 million annually through whale-watching activities," Mrs Turei says.
"So far, the New Zealand Government has been happy to sit back and let someone else do the hard work.
"The Green Party supports non-violent protest and so far this summer Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd have been doing an admirable job. Now it is New Zealand's turn to show our commitment to these beautiful creatures.
"Our Ministers need to show the world and the New Zealand public that they are willing to put their money where their mouths are and send multi-purpose navy ships to challenge the pretence of scientific research that the Japanese Government uses."
