Dolphin Deaths Reinforces Need For Foreign Vessels Regulation
New Zealand First fisheries spokesperson Pita Paraone says the death of 22 common dolphins could have been prevented if
foreign fishing boats were regulated in New Zealand waters.
“This tragic situation highlights the inadequacies of current Government fisheries policy to protect New Zealand
resources,” said Mr Paraone.
“We support the concerns expressed by the New Zealand Federation of Commercial Fishermen who said ‘the killings were an
indictment of the poor standards adopted by foreign charter vessels’.
“While we accept that some people have the right to fish in our waters, we would expect them to abide by our rules and
be held accountable. And that includes responsible fishing that safeguards other species.
“New Zealand First will continue to fight for tougher controls over foreign fishing fleets. This includes raising their
health and safety standards to match ours and introducing tougher penalties for those who continue to flout New Zealand
laws.
“Only when a tougher stance is adopted will foreign fishers be deterred from abusing our marine environment. When will
the Government put the needs of hardworking Kiwi fishers ahead of foreign fishers?” said Mr Paraone.
