Freight Costs Heavy Burden For Farmers And Economy
The bad but unsurprising news that New Zealanders are paying at least 30% more in freight rates than Australians has implications for all New Zealanders who are faced with a higher cost of living.
“New Zealand sheep and beef farmers are feeling the squeeze more than most as they struggle to cope with reduced incomes and other increasing costs,” said agriculture spokesperson for New Zealand First, Doug Woolerton.
“The high cost of freight impacts on productivity and economic competitiveness, and ultimately everyone pays. It is time for the government and the industry to have a hard look at transport costs and find a more equitable funding regime and more sustainable transport solutions.
“Transport costs are a burden for our farmers, for our economy and a hindrance to our competitiveness and future prosperity,” said Mr Woolerton.
