Copeland steps down as co-leader of Future New Zealand
Independent MP Gordon Copeland today advised that he had advised the Party’s Board that he was stepping down as
co-leader of Future New Zealand (now The Kiwi Party).
“I have stepped aside as co-leader in order to focus on my responsibilities as an Independent Member of Parliament and
Deputy Chair of the Commerce Committee during a busy election year,” said Mr Copeland.
“I remained in parliament, after resigning from United Future, to represent the many voters who felt betrayed by that
Party leaders repositioning of United Future as a socially liberal party. This was exemplified by his support for the
anti-smacking legislation which he and the party had opposed at its first reading, prior to the 2005 elections.”
“I will, however, continue to serve the Kiwi Party as a member of the Board and be a candidate in this year’s election.”
“I am delighted that my former parliamentary colleague, Larry Baldock, has been confirmed as leader of The Kiwi Party
and I know that he will do an outstanding job.”
“Starting a new party from scratch has involved a huge amount of work for both Larry and I since we resigned from United
Future, but we have been greatly encouraged by the support received from right across New Zealand.”
“I have no doubt that a constituency exists for a moderate, “for-the-people” party with a commitment to the timeless
values represented by the Judeo-Christian tradition.”
“The Party is in good shape to take the next steps towards electoral success and, as a partner to National in the
formation of the next Government.”
