Mayor welcomes Agreement in Principle
Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast today congratulated the Port Nicholson Block Claims Team and the Government on the signing of an Agreement in Principle to settle all outstanding historical Treaty of Waitangi claims for Taranaki Whanui (Wellington).
“It was a very auspicious occasion yesterday and I was extremely pleased, as Mayor, to witness and be part of it,” Mayor Prendergast says.
Mayor Prendergast says the agreement brings closure to historic grievances and paves the way for Council and the Wellington Tenths Trust to forge an even closer relationship.
“Wellington City Council has a very strong connection and partnership with Wellington Maori through the Wellington Tenths Trust.
“We know they are as committed to our city, its economic development and the welfare of our people as we are and we look forward to continuing that strong partnership going forward,” she says.
“I can only echo the words of Sir Paul Reeves when he says we all have common hopes and aspirations and we all want the best we can achieve for our children and grandchildren. We look forward to working with the Port Nicholson Block claimants to ensure that happens.”
