Burston appointed Crown Solicitor
Attorney-General Michael Cullen announced today the appointment of Grant John Burston as Crown Solicitor at Wellington.
Mr Burston was admitted to the Bar in 1982 and commenced employment with the firm Hogg Gillespie Carter & Oakley as an assistant to Dr D L Mathieson QC. In 1985 Mr Burston commenced working for Luke, Cunningham & Clere, and was admitted to the partnership in 1988. Luke, Cunningham & Clere have held the Crown Solicitor warrant in Wellington since 1936.
Mr Burston has led prosecution teams in many major criminal cases in the High Court and major regulatory prosecutions in the District Court. He has considerable civil litigation experience in the High Court, including public law cases. As well as being convenor of the New Zealand Law Society Evidence Law Reform Committee, he has authored and contributed to various legal texts and lectures on key legal subjects.
Mr Burston takes over from Mr Ken Stone, who retires from the office of Crown Solicitor after 18 years of service.
