CYF to come-a-knocking when parents go-a-smacking
Police confirmation that CYF will become involved in smacking as reported by the public following the section 59
repeal, is a concern raised by United Future deputy leader Judy Turner months ago.
Mrs Turner is emphasising the need for an independent complaints authority for CYF to protect families from the risk of
unnecessary state intervention.
“I am pleased to report that progress towards a new complaints process is happening, and I plan to meet with Children’s
Commissioner Cindy Kiro, Ruth Dyson and CYF officials to discuss how to progress further.
“Exactly what shape the new complaints authority must be meshed out in a timely manner – today’s warning from police
that notifications of smacking will likely mean CYF social worker involvement, shows that urgency in this area is
needed,” says Mrs Turner.
“I think many parents will be concerned to know that they could be expecting a knock on their door from a CYF social
worker if they are seen by neighbours to smack their children.
“The Government must protect parents and act quickly to ensure that CYF is ultimately responsible to someone other than
themselves,” says Mrs Turner.
